Organisation: Bundesvereinigung Nachhaltigkeit e.V. (BVNG) or German Federal Association for Sustainability

Climate change and sustainability have become pressing global concerns, affecting countries worldwide. The urgency of these changes serves as a stark reminder for us as humans to reflect on how we lead our lives and to consider the extent to which we exploit resources to sustain our existence. Given that contributors to these issues span various dimensions and sizes, addressing them requires collective action to drive meaningful change.

During the summer break of 2023, I consider myself fortunate to have been selected as an intern at the German Federal Association for Sustainability, known as Bundesvereinigung Nachhaltigkeit e.V. (BVNG) in German. This authorized organization has been established since 2013 and is located in Berlin, Germany. BVNG strives to foster sustainability in all its facets by integrating efforts across social, environmental, economic, and cultural realms.

Delve into Wide Range of Sustainable Topics

My role as a Research Assistant at BVNG entailed conducting policy research on sustainability issues related to the organization's ongoing projects. Due to BVNG's holistic approach, I had the opportunity to delve into diverse sustainable topics and explore strategies for achieving various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These topics ranged from Circular Economy and the Fast-Fashion Industry to Green Investment.

Given its focus on the German and Berlin context, I also delved into the Berlin political system and kept up-to-date with European Union Regulations, Directives, and Initiatives. This experience was particularly enlightening because it showcased how regulations nudged and influenced the supporting organizations to translate these policies into tangible actions.

Apart from policy research, I was able to participate in project and event preparation. One remarkable event was the Urban Permaculture, part of BVNG's 10th-anniversary event series. During this event, BVNG invited experts and enthusiasts of Urban Permaculture to discuss methods for promoting this approach in Berlin. Urban Permaculture's core principles—earth care, people care, and fair share—fascinated me as it emphasized aligning urban development with natural processes, a more harmonious way of shaping urban environments.

Through this event, I had the privilege of meeting and engaging in discussions with experts from various fields, including researchers, urban planner professionals, gardeners and politicians. From conversations, I gained insights into their concerns and the challenges they face in promoting Urban Permaculture in Berlin and how policies from various sectors play important part in this matter.

Key Takeaways for Home

My internship journey prompted reflections on my home country, Indonesia. As I delved into the contexts, I found myself constantly cross-checking and monitoring Indonesia's progress on each of these issues. While there is much work to be done, I feel empowered and have gained a broader perspective on how sustainability challenges can be addressed.

In conclusion, my internship at BVNG has been a cherished experience. It has not only deepened my understanding of sustainability policies and regulations but has also lighted a sense of responsibility within me. BVNG has provided me with valuable insights and connections to initiate meaningful change and the urgent need for collective action to promote sustainability has never been clearer. As I bid farewell to this organization, I do so with gratitude for the invaluable lessons learned and a renewed commitment to the cause.
